Why does alloy matter?
Aluminum might look one-note to us, but its behavior gets a tune and change depending on the alloy. In our aluminum foil production, we encounter various alloys, each with unique properties impacting the final product's suitability for specific applications. 6063 and 6061, being heat-treatable alloys, are less common in foil production due to their inherent strength. While offering excellent formability, their strength often leads to thicker gauges than are typically desired for foil. We find 5052, known for its superior corrosion resistance, frequently utilized in food packaging applications where purity and longevity are paramount. Its slightly softer nature makes it easier to handle and form into intricate shapes for containers. On the other hand, 5083, with its higher strength, finds niche applications in demanding industrial settings, potentially in heavier-gauge foil for specialized purposes, albeit less frequently than the others.
The alloys 5754 and 6082 present interesting contrasts. 5754, offering a good balance of strength and corrosion resistance, is a versatile choice, sometimes employed where a moderate increase in strength is desired beyond that offered by 5052. Its slightly higher cost, however, necessitates careful consideration of the application's needs. 6082, another heat-treatable alloy, is seldom used in our thinner foil products, but has appeared in thicker gauge applications where enhanced strength is crucial.
